DIY Marketing for Independent Podcasts

On May 27, 2020 Podcastivist Founder Lynn Casper presented a webinar training on DIY Marketing for Independent Podcasts in collaboration with the Association for Independents in Radio (AIR Media).

In this session you will learn DIY marketing strategies to grow your podcast and web presence. By the end of the session you’ll be equipped with the tools you need to build your marketing strategy without the burn out.

How your podcast looks on Twitter

I did an experiment on my personal Twitter feed to see how my podcast @homoground looks when linking to various platforms. I posted links to my overall show page as well as to an individual episode on each platform. I wanted to see which platforms included an embeddable player directly in the post itself.

The platforms I tested are: iTunes, Acast, iHeartRadio, Stitcher, RadioPublic, Google Play, Spotify, Overcast, Podyssey, Castbox

I encourage you to do this for your own podcast to see how things look when linked. It will give you insight on how your artwork displays and the information provided based on which platform you’re linking.

This is How We Mobilize

In October 2019, Podcastivist founder Lynn Casper presented a strategy session for those looking to use their podcasts to do greater good at WNYC Studio’s Werk It Festival for women podcasters.

As individual podcasters, we all have unique audiences who tune in each episode because they relate to us and our content. Often our shows and audiences get stuck in a vacuum, which can be great for building and engaging small communities, but how do we then create a framework that networks our individual efforts on a larger scale? Attendees of the session came with issues they’re working on that need a signal boost.

*At the time I gave this presentation (October 2019), I was not aware of the implications the word “womxn”. It was my understanding at the time that the word indicated the inclusion of trans women. I’ve since learned after giving this presentation, that the word does the opposite and further excludes trans women. It is my intention to create supportive moments among all queer podcasters, which include people on all spectrums of gender, sexuality and identity. I myself identify as non-binary and felt that by presenting at a women’s festival as a non-binary person, I could use the platform to support other queer, trans and non-binary people out there. I apologize for any harm caused by using this word in my presentation and work to help educate others based on this lesson I learned.
